Currency and Foreign Exchange
The currency is Rands and Cents. One Rand ® is equal to 100 cents. Notes are issued in the following denominations : R200, R100, R50, R20, R10. Coins R5, R2, R1, 50c, 20c, 10c 5c, 2c, 1c. Foreign currency may be exchanged at any commercial bank, American Express, Thomas Cook, Rennies Foreign Exchange or Diners Club International office.

Banking Hours
Most banks are open between 09:00 to 15:30 daily, and Saturdays between 08:30 and 11:00, although some are open from 8:30 to 16:30. Small town branches often close between 13:00 and 14:00

Credit Cards/Travellers Cheques
Most international credit cards are accepted, as are travellers cheques.

Postal Facilities
The hours of business are generally from 08:30 to 16:30 on weekdays from 08:00 to 12:00 in Saturdays. Many smaller Post Offices close between 13:00 and 14:00. Phonograms may be phoned in on 1028 or sent from any post office. Telephones are fully automatic with direct dialing to most countries.

Medical Services
Visitors are advised to obtain medical insurance prior to leaving their country of origin. Hospitalisation is generally arranged through medical practitioners, although visitors may phone or go directly to a hospital casualty section, in case of emergency. Out-patient treatment is available at a reduced fee from hospitals.

Trading Hours
General shopping hours are 08:30 to 17:30 on weekdays and 08:00 to 13:00 on Saturdays, although many chain stores and shopping malls are open on Sundays and until late throughout the week. Cafes open at 07:00 or earlier and remain open until late, 7 days a week.

Visitors may borrow from libraries at a nominal fee

Throughout the year, 2 hours in advance of Greenwich Mean Time, 1 hour in advance of Central European Winter Time and 7 hours of Eastern Standard Winter Time, USA

VAT (Value Added Tax)
Currently at 14%, it is included in the price of nearly all good and services, meals, accommodation, etc. Goods consigned or delivered overseas are exempt at point of sale. No refund other than on goods over a certain value is paid at points of exit.

Tipping
It is customary to tip caddies, taxi drivers, hotel and railway porters, chambermaids, stewards, barmen, waiters and tour guides. The accepted average is 10-15%
